This October, join me for five outdoor painting classes filmed on location across Utah's canyon country: Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point, Professor Valley, Zion and beyond. You’ll watch every step of my painting process as it unfolds on site: reading the light, mixing color, building each painting from large shapes to finished strokes.
Stream the classes from your own studio, paint along in real time, or return to the lessons whenever you wish. Each class also continues back in the studio, where I'll show you how to develop photo references of Zion into a range of different paintings.
This year’s locations:
Canyonlands National Park — Layered mesa country where two rivers have carved the Colorado Plateau into one of the most expansive and paintable landscapes in the West.
Fisher Towers — Ancient sandstone monoliths rising against an open sky, with the kind of geological drama that makes every compositional decision interesting.
Dead Horse Point — A narrow rock promontory with a sheer 2,000-foot drop and a panoramic view of the Colorado River below. One of the finest vantage points in canyon country.
Professor Valley — Red cliffs rise straight up from the Colorado River, with the La Sal Mountains standing behind them. A classic Western film backdrop, and one of the most striking stretches along the river road.
Zion National Park — The subject of this year's studio sessions: massive walls of Navajo sandstone, channeling light and shadow in ways that reward careful observation of value and color.
